Sony is perhaps the most renowned name in electronics. They don’t just make televisions; this company is also responsible for countless mp3 players, DVD players, Blu-ray players, and of course PlayStation 1, 2, and 3. Founded in Japan in 1946, the company rakes in almost $80 billion in revenue each year, making it one of the most trusted names in the tech world.
But are its televisions any good? That, of course, depends on which type you’re talking about. Like most other big-name brands, Sony TVs come in a variety of styles. There are Sony LCD TVs, Sony plasma TVs, and old-school Sony WEGA TVs, the exceptionally popular late 1990s CRT TV option.
All of these televisions vary greatly in their style and quality. However, like most Sony products, each and every one is capable of impressive performance, and those built in the last few years boast some of the finest pictures on the market today. How else would they have racked up almost $80 billion in revenue?
Advantages of Sony TVs
The advantage of a Sony television is the quality of its picture. There is no better example of this than the Sony Bravia series of TVs, Sony’s premium sub-brand of LCD TVs. Sony’s original motto for this line was “Bravia – Color Like No Other,” and for the most part that’s indeed true. For example, one of the company’s most popular recent releases in the Bravia line is the eco-friendly KDL-40VE5, a 40-inch LCD TV that features 100,000:1 contrast ratio and incredibly deep blacks and vibrant colors. Many of Sony’s new Bravia televisions are now pushing the limits for convenience and power efficiency, boasting an incredible four HDMI ports and some of the most energy-efficient technology on the market today.
Disadvantages of Sony TVs
As with many name brand televisions available today, Sony televisions suffer most from high price points. Even the aforementioned Bravias (such as the KDL-40VE5) are often far more expensive than LG TVs or Samsung TVs. It’s often hard to find a Sony big screen TV, be it plasma or LCD, for under a thousand bucks, and if that’s a problem for your budget, it might be wise to look into one of these more affordable name brands.
